Komla Dumor |
The radio station, which is barely two months old, named the newsroom Komla Afeke Dumor on Thursday.
Professor Ernest Dumor, father of the late broadcast journalist, speaking at the unveiling event, stated that he was really overwhelmed that such a young station would choose to name its newsroom after his son.
“It is really overwhelming that this young station will choose to name its newsroom after Komla. We as a family have been struggling to try and define who Komla really was. Indeed he was my son but he has become more than a son to other people and so this opportunity is most welcome and we are grateful,” Prof Dumor said.

The Professor encouraged members of the Starr FM news team to be guided by the fundamental principles that drove Komla in his professional work.
“One of the things I want to leave with you as you think of how to shape your newsroom is the fundamental principle I think drove Komla in his professional work. I searched and I came to one basic principle. That principle has been ascribed to the celebrated Roman-Jewish system, which is the health, the welfare and the good of the people shall be the supreme law. And so that is the passion of Komla; and I hope as you work your way through with this newsroom, that principle will also guide you,” he added.
Management of the station as a sign of appreciation presented an amount of GH¢5,000 to support the Komla Dumor Foundation which is headed by Mrs Chinery Hesse.
Managing Editor of Starr FM, Daniel Kondor, added that Komla Dumor inspired journalists in the entire African continent and even beyond to work hard in their field of endeavour.
“This newsroom is dedicated to the memory of our brother, colleague, son, friend and ace broadcaster Komla Afeke Dumor. He lifted journalism to heights that I cannot stand here and describe. It will be an understatement to say that Komla inspired journalists of the entire African continent and even beyond,” Mr Kondor said.
The event was also graced by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.
