ASSEMBLY MEMBERS COMMONFUND CRITICAL TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT – BERNARD ODURO TAKYI

Presiding Member for Sunyani West District Assembly and Lead Advocate for the Assembly Members Common Fund initiative, Bernard Oduro Takyi has reiterated the strategic role Assembly Members play and the need for a fund.

In a recent interview on Happy FM’s “Epa Hoa Daben” current affairs show, the Presiding Member stressed that Assembly members were the foundation of the local governance system and therefore critical that they are resourced like any other Officer of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and added that such measures will equip them to deliver their mandate adequately in accordance with Chapter 20 of the 1992 Constitution and the Local Governance Act, Act 936. 

In the past weeks, Mr. Oduro Takyi and other Assembly Members have been on national radio and television stations explaining the rationale for their proposal. Their approach and advocacy seek to plead with the key Stakeholders in the Local Governance set up through to find a more sustainable way of empowering Assembly members to deliver on their mandate to their Electoral Areas.

In calling for this fund, the Assembly Members are not asking for a source of fund but a restructuring of the current 5% earmarked for Community Initiated Projects under the District Assemblies Common Fund. To ensure accountability and efficient use of state funds, a proposed financial framework with checks, balances and sanctions was mentioned as a step to ensure that funds are directed to the right plans and initiatives. Details of their proposal including usage, systems etc. are to be developed, deliberately and discussed with State officials responsible for local governance. 

Commenting on the duties of an Assembly Member, Mr. Oduro Takyi stressed that Assembly Members are the bedrock of national development.  “A wise, experienced and professional Assembly Member with the right resources would be able to mobilize, initiate and ensure government policy and strategies are fully absorbed by their respectively communities. “We live, sleep, eat and drink in our local communities, we are the first point of call for any celebration or sorrow in our communities. Why can’t we then be conduit for policy success? It is an easy thing to do if the structures are enhanced”. 

He commended the government’s commitment in ensuring that MMDCEs are elected and added that it was a bold step to ensuring grassroot accountability and transparency.

NUGS HOLDS MAIDEN GLOBAL LEADERSHIP FORUM IN BEIJING; CHINA

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) – Beijing Chapter in collaboration with Zhogguancun the Belt and Road Initiative Promotional Association (ZBRA); an independent nonprofit social organization which aims to integrate China’s innovative technology in the development of China’s Belt and Road Initiative organized the maiden edition of a leadership and development forum dubbed “Global Leadership Forum” in Beijing; China.

The forum, which aimed at providing a platform for international youth to communicate and cooperate in diversity, was patronized and had participants from leaders, youth and students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities residing in China.

Mr. Zhang Xiadong; President of ZBRA highlighted the impact of ZBRA on the development and nurturing of innovative ideas. He encouraged participants and international students to take advantage of his organization’s platform to launch their ideas and set up businesses in China.

Explaining his organization’s impact, he mentioned that ZBRA trains brilliant international students in business and ideas development, assist international students in setting up businesses in China by providing space, research and professional guidance, searches and places international students in companies in need of interns and other provides services available to students without discrimination. His organization exists to assist students in integrating and gaining access to Chinese leading multinationals to know more about China’s innovation and development.

To share China’s impressive growth and opportunities available, the forum had Dr. Hu Biliang; Executive Dean of the Beijing Normal University The Belt and Road School delivering the keynote speech. Dr. Biliang took participants through China’s 40 years of reform and opening up to the world and explained factors that contributed to China’s rise to global success and power.

He listed China’s unique economic model and ability to blend the formal and informal systems such as culture and traditions in its development. He noted “Everywhere, social networking is very important but in China, it is particularly important” when speaking about the role culture played in the development of the country.

To enhance the image of Africa and tell the compelling African story, representatives from African Missions in China including Ghana and Kenya took turns in sharing their country’s development trajectory. Mr. Sylvester Kofi Akyereku; Minister/Consular from Ghana’s Embassy in Beijing spoke on Ghana’s development, successes and learnings and from Kenya, Mr. Zachary Bosire Omariba from the Kenyan Embassy in Beijing did same.

On his part, Ahmed Abdul Basit Sofo; President of the National Union of Ghana Students Beijing Chapter, encouraged participants to take advantage of their presence in China, develop networks and meaningful relationships with like-minded Chinese national and other international students for future collaborations.

Participants at the forum were excited and had their passions re-ignited to achieve success in today’s competitive global world. A participant remarked “We rarely get opportunities to attend free leadership and development seminars with participants and speakers from diverse and experienced backgrounds in Beijing. It is therefore commendable that NUGS put this together with ZBRA at no cost to participants and we hope that subsequent sessions will be held with new speakers”.

Following the success of the maiden edition, participants are expectant and anxious for subsequent editions.

Madina – Adenta – Aburi Highway... Blessing or Curse?

Not a single footbridge (from Madina Firestone to Adenta) has been completed since the construction of the Madina – Adenta – Aburi Highway.

What shocks me is that the uncompleted footbridges have become advertising sites for politicians (incumbent and aspiring MPs) and some organizations among others.

Before you think of politicizing this post, let me remind you that both political parties have sat unconcerned as innocent Ghanaians die trying to cross this highway. Corporate Ghana also looks at these structures that have become ‘white elephants’ and see an avenue to sell their brands by advertising on them and I believe government also makes money from this by charging these organizations money before they advertise on the uncompleted footbridges.

According to reports, more than 190 deaths have occurred on that highway as pedestrians are forced to compete with speeding drivers to be able to cross to the other side of the road. Just last night, a friend told me of another death that occurred on that same stretch.

For once, I think people need to be angry enough and tell those in authority to fix these bridges immediately else we might wakeup someday and the worse would have happened.

Jordan Ayew and Jeffery Schlupp came on in the second half for Crystal Palace when they lost 3-1 against Chelsea.

In the premier league 2, English born Ghanaian Jerome Opoku was not in the team for Fulham when they won 2-0 against Southampton.

3G Media is a Ghanaian owned and operated online news and entertainment media house led by US-based Media Mogul; Charles Nimmo Ntiamoah-Mensah (Mr. CNN). Since 2009, the company set up 3G Magazine, 3gmediaonline.com, and 3G Awards.

3G Awards is an annual event; dubbed; "A Night of Heroes" recognizes the sacrifice and dedication of the leading trailblazers of the greater Ghanaian and Global communities. It has honoured over hundreds of personalities who have made a difference in their communities and changed lives.

3G Media also every year invites; government officials, celebrities and businessmen/women to visit New York and network with their fellow American business colleagues. The key area is creating an opportunity for Ghanaian based with their US counterparts.
