Wanlov
Controversial Musician Wanlov the Kubolor, who has been leading a crusade for the legalisation of the use of marijuana in Ghana, has made a shocking revelation to Nii Ogbamey Tetteh, stating that he has never used the narcotic drug.

The singer became very vocal about marijuana while describing the law that prohibits its use as “foolish”. His outburst was provoked by the arrest and ongoing prosecution of popular hiplife musician Kwaw Kese in Kumasi for smoking a substance suspected to be marijuana.

The barefoot walking rapper has over the years pulled some very daring acts in Ghana including showing his manhood on TV among others. Most people have however attributed his unique behaviour to the use of marijuana, which was apparently false.

“I have never smoked wee in my life and I have never used it before,” Wanlov disclosed exclusively to the website.

Wanlov had in an earlier report disclosed that Ghana did not want to legalise the use of “hemp” because Ghanaians are being influenced by the western world who themselves have legalised its use.

“We have ministers here that leave the country to go and sit at these weed joints in Amsterdam and smoke. We follow blindly; let’s open our eyes and amend these laws. They are only copying America where they themselves have now legalised it. The first instance for them banning weed was because they said it makes white women have sex with black men. Later, the economic reason also applied to it. They realised that hemp-producing countries would become stronger economic powerhouses than America,” he said.

Kwabena Adjei dedicating the award to Ambassador Ademola Oluseyi Onafowokan
The management of Kasapreko Company Limited on Thursday dedicated their Medicinal Herbal Drink of the Year award to the Nigerian High Commission in Accra.

The herbal alcoholic beverage company was adjudged the Medicinal Herbal Drink of the year 2014 at the Africa Product Forum organised by the Institute for Government Research Leadership Technology at Abuja in Nigeria.

According to Kwabena Adjei, Group Chairman for Kasapreko, the award is testimony that Nigeria appreciates good things.

“We dedicate this award to our loyal consumers the world over, especially in Nigeria, who have over the years enjoyed authentic natural bitters –Alomo from Kasapreko. Since the introduction of Alomo Bitters unto the Nigerian market about four years ago, our growth has been driven largely by consumer demand in Nigeria. Nigerians love Alomo Bitters for many reasons. Alomo Bitters is produced with hundred percent natural ingredients. We are working to expand our operations in Nigeria within the next couple of months with the introduction of some new brands,” Mr Adjei stated.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Ademola Oluseyi Onafowokan, who hosted some management members from Kasapreko at his office, stated that out of the 170 million people in Nigeria, over 60 million of them drink Alomo.

“When I came to Ghana and I discovered that Alomo was made in Ghana, I was shocked because I thought it was made in Nigeria. I’m very proud that Nigeria and Ghana are getting it right. Africans have started trading with each other and it is with a lot of pleasure that I will like to say that today Nigeria is Ghana’s biggest trade partner. Nigeria has a population of 170 million, at least 60 million of them will drink Alomo,” Ambassador Onafowokan said.

He urged the Kasapreko Company to extend their market beyond Nigeria to the rest of West Africa.

“I want to say many congratulations to you all for your achievements. Keep the boat of Alomo sailing and raise the flag higher. But we can take it further than that. There is a huge market in West Africa, which I think Alomo should reach out to. Today is a special day in the sense that the award given in Nigeria by the institute of leadership will be represented by Alomo to make it very authentic and a symbol of Ghana-Nigeria relationship. I personally as a person, I’m very passionate about trade and investment promotion; and being posted to Ghana, I see myself as a commercial ambassador of international commercial exchange,” he said.

Kasapreko also donated some boxes of their product to the Nigerian High Commission as a sign of goodwill.

Wanlov
In the wake of the ongoing national debate over whether or not to legalise the use of marijuana in Ghana, popular musician Wanlov the Kubolor says the law that prohibits its possession and use is “foolish”.

The raging debate was sparked after the arrest and ongoing prosecution of popular hiplife musician Kwaw Kesse in Kumasi for smoking a substance suspected to be marijuana.

“What I’m trying to deal with is the fact that people are saying that if Kwaw Kesse should go free then all other weed people who have been arrested should also go free, which is true because that law is too strict and it is a very foolish law. At least ten years jail time doesn’t really make sense,” Wanlov told NEWS-ONE.

Kwaw Kesse has been denied bail thrice and is expected to be in court on December 22.

Wanlov continued: “Kwaw is representing everybody in that situation. At the moment, legal proceedings are ongoing and you know they cost money. He is going to be paying his lawyer. If he was granted bail, he could be working and gathering money. Right now if he is fined or told to do time, he will still have to pay his lawyer and the state.”

Wanlov, who performed live at the just ended Big Weekend Afro-Beats Festival, has been very vocal ever since rapper Kwaw Kesse was apprehended for publicly smoking a substance suspected to be marijuana.

During his performance at the concert, Wanlov sang a song calling for Kwaw’s release.

Wanlov disclosed that Ghanaians do not want to legalise the use of “hemp” because they are being influenced by the western world who themselves have legalised its use.

“When hemp is processed into rope, it is seven times stronger and lasts way longer than steel. If Ghana harnesses the power of hemp and uses it in many ways like medicine and other things, it can put us somewhere,” Wanlov said.

Lawyer and politician Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, Executive Director of Danquah Institute (DI), has also expressed misgivings about Kwaw’s situation and described the law under which he was arrested as an “absolutely stupid” one. He said such an arrest can happen only in a “primitive society”.

So why should a very popular musician who, I presume, had no previous record, whose address is known, be remanded in jail for smoking weed? Is it because of that stupid law passed by the NPP in a panic reaction to MV Benjamin? I am not for any drugs (weed, cocaine, heroin, alcohol, cigarette etc) but this law is absolutely stupid!” Mr Otchre-Darko wrote on his facebook wall not long after Kwaw’s arrest.

He added: “We are indeed a primitive society! We jail a person for 18 years for defrauding a person of mobile money (phone units). We jail a person eight years for stealing a goat. We lock people up for smoking what civilised societies may consider as a mere Class C drug. We grant bail to drunk drivers who mow down and slaughter five bystanders and, we celebrate those who create schemes to loot and share the billions of dollars that should offer education and skills training, build our infrastructure and open the economic space so that jobs can be created for those with education and trade to not fall into the temptation of petty theft, fraud and what have you… And, we will spend inordinate amount of airtime talking about things that have nothing to do with keeping our people alive, safe, healthy, educated and prosperous. And, we are happy to shout on roof tops: edey beeee kεkε!”

Episode
Fast rising Dancehall act Episode says he does not need drugs or alcohol to put up a spectacular show on stage.

Episode who put up an exciting performance at the just ended ‘ Big Weekend Afro-Beats Festival’ at the Independence Square in Accra, told NEWS-ONE that the energy and style he emits anytime is mounts the stage to perform is all natural and he considers that as a blessing.

“My style is a blessing. Most of the time, I don’t really draw plan for whatever I have to go and do on stage like the way other artistes line up their stuff. I just go on the stage and feel like yo this is what I have to give to them.  I believe that me being a musician is another way of spreading the gospel and spreading the word as well. It is all natural; I don’t depend on drugs or alcohol to boss. Just a little prayer and rehearsal and boom, “Episode stated.

Episode was part of a tall list of artistes including Pappy Kojo, Joey B and D Black among others who thrilled patrons on the first day of the weekend event.

The ‘Sinner’s Prayer’ singer disclosed that Dancehall as a genre cannot be devoid of rivalry because it is good for the business.

“I believe that Dancehall is one of the genres that you can’t really take it cool. You can’t also put rivalry out of Dancehall. So me being an artiste who loves unity and as a youth coming up from all these camps—you see me with High Grade family, you see me with   Shatta Movement Family—I believe that I’m the middle man and most of the time you need to pull them together, which is good for business because at the end of the day if you don’t take it from that aspect, the fans are going to suffer,” he said.

Theophilus Nii Ardey Otoo Junior, as he is known in real life, added that though it was impossible to predict his own future, he someday aims at putting Africa on the map through the Dancehall genre.

“Episode is music, Episode is sinner’s prayer. He is a youth none of them can stop because Episode is a pastor and messenger as well. I can’t really predict the future but I just want to put Africa on the map,” he noted.
Lauryn Hill
Legendary American superstar Ms Lauryn Hill over the weekend put up an awesome world class music performance in Accra during the 2014 edition of the Big Weekend Afro-Beats Festival.

It was Ms Hill’s first show in West Africa and she was headline artiste for the three-day music festival put together by multi-purpose events company BBnZ Live.

For over an hour and a half, Ms Hill staged an electrifying live acoustic concert that captivated her audience in frenzy as though she were a music demigoddess who had descended in Accra to entertain beyond expectation.

She proved that she was a versatile artiste and treated the audience to songs from her former hip-hop group, ‘The Fugees’, performed hit songs from her personal albums as well as songs from the Reggae King, Bob Marley.

It was thrilling to have a world class musician come to Ghana and perform back to back hit songs to a crowd made up of not only Ghanaians but persons who had flown in from America, Europe and some African countries just to witness the historic night.

Ms Hill and her band lived up to expectations and proved she deserved the legendary status her fans have bestowed on her before they returned to the plush Movenpick Ambassador Hotel where they were lodged.

A fine breed of Ghanaian musicians including Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Wanlov, Episode, Efya, Mzvee, D-Black, Bisa K’Dee, Joey B, Koo Ntakrah, Lil Shaker and Jay-So among others were on the performance bill.

Nigerian act MI also pulled a surprise at the show when he appeared on stage with XO-Senavoe to further wow the audience.
Sarkodie in particular did a wonderful job when he appeared on stage around 3am after Ms Hill’s performance but succeeded in making the dispersed crowd reassemble.

Many thought the show was over after Ms Hill was done and they were at the threshold of exiting the venue just when Sarkodie’s voice boomed through the microphone. As though the artiste had some magnetic force, he literally got the crowd running back to watch him and dance to his performance.
The Big Weekend Afro-Beats Festival was first held in Ghana in December 2013 as a historic entertainment festival to re-brand the country as one capable of hosting world class music concerts and an enviable tourist destination in West Africa.

Club Beer was beverage sponsor of the three-day concert.

RnB singer Rihanna loves to go naked and exposes her valuables all the time on Instagram.

After the ‘Man Down’ singer hosted her inaugural Diamond Ball event, she decided to conduct her own little photo shoot.

Rihanna was wearing a midnight blue gown which had a voluminous skirt that was so big that some of her entourage could hide underneath it.

In one of the photos, the Grammy-winning singer posed topless exposing her breasts while smoking a cigar.

Rihanna protected her nipples with the strategic angle of her arms, as she would have been barred on Instagram if she had revealed them.

She captioned the picture: ‘Thank you to this spectacular team for donating their time and hard work at the #DiamondBall’.

In another black and white image she can be seen leaning back seductively on one friend while another caresses her chest.

Soft drink giant, Coca Cola is ending its sponsorship with the Fox singing competition, American Idol.

“When the Fox show returns for its 14th season on January 7, it will be without its longtime sponsor, Coca-Cola,” reported Hollywoodreporter.com

“Coca-Cola and Fox have mutually decided to end their 13-year ‘American Idol’ partnership,” the companies said in a joint statement. “We look forward to working together on new collaborations in the future,” adage.com also reported.

Red Coca-Cola cups have been a staple in front of “Idol” judges since the show debuted in June 2002. The green room was also branded by Coke as a “red room.”

The reality singing competition has been credited with helping Coca-Cola boost its market share over rival PepsiCo, which famously passed on sponsoring “Idol” in its first season. Coca-Cola initially paid less than $10 million to sponsor “Idol” in its first season.

But “American Idol” has lost its cache in recent years as ratings declined precipitously, according to adage.com.

Its most recent season finale averaged 10.1 million viewers, down 27% from the season prior. In its heyday, “Idol” regularly attracted an average of 30 million viewers. Its most-watched finale, the season 2 showdown between Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, brought in 38 million people.

Fox is now cutting back on the number of hours it airs the show. “American Idol” will start the season on Jan. 7 airing two nights a week, then eventually go to a single weekly episode that includes both performances and results.

On average, advertisers are paying around $225,000 to $250,000 for a 30-second spot in the show, with some agencies noting some clients are still paying more than $300,000. While this still makes “Idol” one of the costliest shows to advertise in, it’s a far cry from the $500,000 or so advertisers spent in 2011.

Last season, “American Idol” also lost AT&T as a sponsor following a 12-year stint. But Ford will return as a sponsor for season 14, a Fox spokeswoman confirmed.

Wanlov @ Afrobeats 2014
Popular musician, Wanlov The Kubolor, early Monday morning took injury after performing at the 2014 edition of Afrobeat Music Festival, which took place at the Independence Square in Accra.

The barefooted walking musician ran his foot against a broken bottle and got wounded in the process. He was attempting to join music fans who were cheering Sarkodie’s performance at the time, when the incident took place.

Blood oozed out of his wounded foot for some minutes before military personnel came to offer him first aid.

American musician, Lauryn Hill was the headline artiste of this year’s Afrobeat festival, with other top notch performances from Sarkodie, Efya, Chase Forever, MI, Joey B, Episode, Stonebwoy, D Black and others.

Wanlov was among the performers. He performed on Saturday and Sunday and was in his usual barefoot element with his big dreadlocks and a wrapper.

But the controversial musician unfortunately left the event ground on Monday morning with an injured foot.

Joyce Dzidzor Mensah
Joyce Dzidzor Mensah, Ghana’s highly respected HIV/AIDS Ambassador, has told NEWS-ONE she had never tested positive for HIV but was only telling the nation and the world a lie just to satisfy her selfish interests.

Joyce has claimed over the years that she was HIV positive but was a healthy person because she was on antiretroviral drugs.

She has had support and funding from several organisations, institutions, banks and civil society in her campaign across the country on how to prevent HIV and how persons who have tested positive can live healthily and happily with the virus.

Surprisingly, Joyce, 27, has told NEWS-ONE she was only a scammer and that she decided to engage in a wild public deceit so as to get a place to lay her head at a time her neighbours were wrongly accusing her of having HIV.

“I was known as the HIV ambassador. The story I shared in the past years was a fusion of my story and the stories of others. The truth of the matter is, I was never infected with HIV,” she said.

Meanwhile Dzidzor has toured several Ghanaian schools and mounted international platforms to fight the stigma against HIV & AIDS victims as well as encouraging young men and women to abstain from premarital sex and unprotected sex.

Below is exactly what Dzidzor said:
THIS IS THE STORY
I met a man in my church where I used to fellowship. We fell in love but I didn’t know of his HIV status.

Though he knew he was HIV positive, he never told me. A member of the church who is a nurse once saw me with him and she called me to advise me. The nurse advised me to be careful with him because she knew of his HIV status. Fortunately for me, I met the nurse just a day after I had sex with the man.

I then confided in the nurse and she asked me to quickly report at the hospital so that I can be given PEP (Post Exposure Profilaxis). I did exactly that in order not to contract the HIV virus.

I became pregnant though, but I decided to keep the pregnancy.

My boyfriend fell sick and died before I had the baby. People stigmatised me without knowing if I contracted HIV from him or not. I was eventually beaten and thrown out of the house I was living in with my parents. Having nowhere to stay, I went to live in the secretariat of the associations of persons living with HIV.

I played along and behaved as if I had HIV too just to have a place to lay my head and learn from people living with HIV. I attended a lot of workshops organised by NGOs on HIV just to equip myself with information. I heard lots of HIV interesting stories from people on stigma related issues.

At a point in time, I accepted and lived like a person living with HIV. And I always told my story as if I was living with HIV. I shared my story based on what I went through just to let people know that people with HIV are normal human beings.

I would have contracted the virus and probably died but God saved me. That was why going to schools to educate them became my passion just for students to abstain from premarital sex.

WHY I ACTED AS A PERSON LIVING WITH HIV
I realised that there was no way of defending myself when people started gossiping about me in my neighbourhood. It was because my boyfriend in the church died of AIDS and my church members and neighbours knew he died of AIDS. There was no way I could ever defend myself.

At a point, I had to accept the situation at hand. I knew there was going to be a time the truth about my status was going to come out, and this is the time.

I plead with the general public and my fans not to be disappointed in me for acting all these years. It was worth it because a lot of lives were saved through my advocacy work.

I also sincerely apologise to the hundreds of churches I have been to with my message both in Ghana and abroad to forgive me. I did it to fight HIV stigma and discrimination.

I also plead with schools, institutions and banks who have all benefited from my story to forgive me.

I now therefore want to thank all who have supported me throughout these years one way or the other.

Why The Confession Now?
I want to officially announce to the general public that I am no more the HIV ambassador due to the fact that the First Lady has been made the HIV ambassador.

Also, there have been rumours in town that I am dead but as at now I don’t know the source of the information. I was out of the country for three months now and I returned only to be receiving calls and text messages asking if I’m dead. My stepfather nearly collapsed when he heard the news about my death. I want to inform everyone that I am not dead.”

Kwaw Kese
Leading telecommunications company, MTN, will organise the 2014 edition of its annual Nine Lessons and Carols this Friday, December 19, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Conspicuously missing from the performance list for this year is incarcerated hiplife artiste Kwaw Kesse aka Abodam.

Abodam has over the years endeared himself to patrons of the annual MTN Carols. At one of such events, he appeared with a live fowl strapped in pampers as part of his theatrics and eventually got the auditorium on fire with guests dancing and singing to his version of the ‘Little Drummer Boy’.

The following year, Abodam again turned the auditorium upside down when he appeared on stage with a huge dog dressed in Santa costume.

Abodam is however in prison custody and his case has been adjourned to Monday December 22, three clear days after the carols night.

This year, however, has all time favourite Ghanaian boxer Bukom Banku and his arch rival Ayittey Powers on the bill and the duo will be putting up a Christmas carol on the night.

Friday’s show will also have some of Ghana’s best musicians including Samini, Raquel, Boadiwaa, Snow-B and Torgbe performing Christmas songs with the backing of the Eldunamis Band.

Friday’s event will be the sixth edition and expectations are very high as the event has thrilled its audience beyond expectation for the last five years.

Ivan Quashigah, Chief Executive of Farmhouse, explained that the event is a way of saying thank you to members of the MTN family and giving them a direct feel of the Christmas experience.
Jay Foley
Loud in GH, YFM’s annual musical concert, has taken an exciting turn this year.

Sponsored by Guinness, the event would feature several new twists which have never been done in any of the previous Loud In GH events.

This year’s event, themed the ‘Swag Edition’, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

According to Jay Foley, General Manager of YFM, “This year, we want to give our listeners and fans a completely new experience that will leave them yearning for more.”

The 2014 Loud in GH concert would set the capital on a music explosion as the jam gets 3x bigger and exciting. We are grateful to Guinness Ghana Limited for partnering us in this event. With their support, we know that the Loud in GH-Swag Edition will be the perfect platform for our fans and followers to show the world what they are truly ‘Made Of.”

The Loud In GH-Swag Edition would be held in two parts; the first part is an outdoor carnival which starts from 3:00pm on the greens of the Conference Centre. It would then build up into an evening of music, arts and clubbing in the foyer area of the Conference Centre, where people would be treated to mind-blowing music from YFM’s finest DJs from Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi.

Present at the event would be personalities from all walks of life including some well-known faces in the entertainment industry.

Rapper MENSA of the Foes of Kwame Nkrumah (FoKn) Bois fame has said though hiplife artiste Kwaw Kesse is currently behind bars for smoking a substance suspected to be ganga, he will come out stronger and possibly
as a born again.

Mensa, popularly referred to as the lyrical twin of Wanlov the Kubolor, happens to be one of the Ghanaian celebrities championing the course for the law to be lenient on the ‘Nonsense’ hit maker.

“Difficult year for @kwawkesse. He can only come out stronger (which he will) or broken; and fucking born again….,” Mεnsa posted on his Twitter page on Tuesday.

The ‘King of the Streets’ made his first appearance in court on November 24 and was denied bail instantly.

He appeared in court again on December 8 but was denied bail again.

He is to spend another two weeks in prison custody until December 22, his adjourned court date.

Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Sharon Bar-li
Come December 5, Ghana would host the Israeli Film Festival at the Silverbird cinema at the Accra Mall.

According to organisers of the event, a 2-day film festival would present viewers a unique window into the diverse and complicated weave of Israeli culture as well as offer something for everyone to learn through films.

“After a successful debut of the 1st Israeli Film Festival last year, it returns for the second time with new and fascinating films, all opened to the general public and screened free of charge. Among the films to be screened are ‘A Matter of Size’, ‘Walk on Water’ and ‘Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi’ among others,” one of the organisers stated.

The festival will be opened with a festival screening of award winning film ‘The Dove Flyer’.

It will also give Ghanaians the opportunity to meet and interact with Israelis while watching the films.

Last year, the event brought together patrons around the country who were treated to some spectacular Israeli films.
Lady Gaga
American singer Lady Gaga has revealed that as a teenager she was raped by a music producer who was 20 years older than her.

When asked about the rape on ‘The Howard Stern Show’, Lady Gaga initially said: “I don’t…I don’t want to… Happy times! Let’s talk about happy things!”

The 28-year-old singer admitted that she went through some horrific things when she was 19 and relied on a lot of mental and physical therapy to help her to heal.

“I went through some horrific things that I’m able to laugh [at] now, because I’ve gone through a lot of mental and physical therapy and emotional therapy to heal over the years.  My music has been wonderful for me. But you know, I was a shell of my former self at one point. I was not myself.  To be fair, I was about 19. I went to Catholic school and then all this crazy stuff happened, and I was going, ‘Oh, is this just the way adults are?’…I was very naïve,” she stated.

Asked if she had ever confronted the rapist who was 20 years older than her, she explained that that would terrify and paralyse her.

“I saw him one time in a store and I was so paralysed by fear. Because it wasn’t until I was a little bit older that I went, ‘Wow, that was really messed up.’

The blonde beauty, who is dating actor Taylor Kinney, didn’t tell anybody about the incident at the time but eventually decided to seek help.

“I don’t know what I was thinking. I didn’t tell anybody.  And I didn’t even tell myself for the longest time. And then I was like, You know what? All this drinking and all this nonsense, you have to go to the source, otherwise it just won’t go away. It will not go away,” Lady Gaga said.
